Connect to a wireless network

For info about connecting your Surface to a wireless network using the built-in Wi-Fi, see Get online.

A modem converts data to a signal so it can be easily sent and received over a phone line, cable, or satellite connection. For transmission over an analog telephone line—which was once the most popular way to access the internet—the modem converts data between analog and digital formats in real time for two-way network communication.

Notes:

  • Make sure that your modem is connected to a working phone jack or cable connection, either directly or through your router.

  • To find out which versions of Wi-Fi your Surface supports, you can open the Command Prompt, and then type netsh wlan show drivers. Look next to Radio types supported and see which Wi-Fi versions are listed.

  • If you’re having trouble finding your wireless network in the list of available networks, your wireless router might not be set to broadcast its network ID (SSID). To turn on SSID broadcasting, check the info that came with the wireless router. For more info about how to connect to a hidden wireless network, see Wired and wireless problems.
